The New Horizons Cinciditarod is a wacky shopping cart race through the city. It’s named in tribute to the Alaskan Iditarod – a brutal 1,100-mile dog-sledding race – but instead of dogs, it’s people; instead of sleds, it’s shopping carts; and instead of Alaska, it’s Cincinnati.

In years past, the Tyler Davidson Fountain was activated on Opening Day without fanfare. The event went largely unnoticed, which seems inadequate for Cincinnati’s most prized possession and most beloved landmark. To give the Genius of Water her own celebration is not only fitting but also leverages the excitement surrounding another great Cincinnati tradition – Opening Day.
The Prosperity will kick off the fourth annual Raymond James Fountain Day at 11:30 a.m. with their upbeat “folk rock & roll for the soul.” Emcee Bob Herzog of Local 12 will introduce Mayor Mark Mallory, who officially welcomes spring to the city and gives the signal to let the water flow once again from the hands of the Genius of Water atop the beautiful Tyler Davidson Fountain.

The Bethany Sininger Flege Pancreatic Cancer Research and
Awareness Fund was founded in 2010 raise funds to benefit Pancreatic
Cancer Research, Education, Prevention & Awareness Programs in the
United States with preference given to Southwest Ohio. It is an
all-volunteer organization in which more than 98% of the donations go to the
mission. In addition to supporting cancer research, funds may be
used to increase community awareness about the importance
of prevention and early detection. It is the goal that progress can be
made to reduce the fatality rate for pancreatic cancer, currently one
of the highest among all cancers. Although the fight against pancreatic
cancer continues to be an uphill battle, progress is being made.
Newer drug regiments have increased the median survival of patients with
advanced cancer, tumors can be biopsied for molecular analysis and determine
specific, personalized, drug regiments for each patient. With continued
research and awareness programs the potential of surviving this disease can
vastly increase.
“If someone asked you which cancer affects the most people
— leukemia or pancreas cancer — how would you answer?”
Thanks to nationwide awareness campaigns, most would say
leukemia. But in reality, the number of people affected by each disease is
about the same. The shocking truth is that pancreas cancer has a higher
fatality rate than all other cancers. Clearly there is a critical need for more
effective drug treatments, early detection and prevention. The only way that
can happen is with increased community awareness and more research.”

Cincinnati Santacon is a gathering of like-minded individuals who get into the Christmas spirit and spread Christmas cheer to their fellow men and women.
On the morning of the event, each participant receives a text message on his or her mobile phone with instructions to arrive at a given location wearing a Santa or Mrs. Claus suit.
Throughout the day, participants continue to receive text messages guiding them on foot through downtown Cincinnati. (Many of the locations are bars, so this is not an event for children.)
Supplied with candy canes, the Santas sing songs, make merry, and spread good cheer through the City!

Fountain Square can get hot in the summer, but it’s a lot hotter on Thursday nights when bands like Tropicoso, Acapulco, Son del Caribe, and ¡Zumba! lay down spicy Latin rhythms. Instructors on the dance floor teach the basic steps, and when it gets too hot, dancers can cool down with a cold soft drink or adult beverage.
Spend an evening on the Square and take a trip around the world as you sample a vast assortment of local, national and international wines.
Be part of the Lupus Foundation of America Greater Ohio's WALK FOR LUPUS NOW® in your community and help raise critically needed funds and awareness for this unpredictable and life-threatening disease. In Seattle, fish tossing at the Pike Place Market is a top tourist draw. In Cincinnati, it’s another wacky contest that brings people out to Fountain Square.
Teams of four people have 60 seconds to toss whole, raw fish from person to person down a 50-foot course. The team that gets the most fish all the way down the line wins four $20 gift cards and a trophy.
Congrats to “Yeah! 2 Pounds!, Coaches Corner” for winning this 2011′s Fish Toss! They passed 27 smelly fish down a 50-foot course in 60 seconds!

Outside Texas, Cincinnati is the most chili-crazed city in the United States, with more chili parlors per capita and per square mile than any other city in the country. According to the Cincinnati USA Convention & Visitors Bureau, Cincinnatians consume more than 2 million pounds of chili each year, topped with 850,000 pounds of shredded cheese. No wonder so many people sign up for this contest!
In the contest, twelve people compete against each other in a timed event. The object is to eat as many cheese coneys as possible in three minutes. (See the Official Contest Rules.)

The Servpro Water Balloon Toss was a traditional distance challenge, with players in two parallel lines tossing a water balloon across a short space that grew larger as the game continued. A broken balloon meant that team was out!

It’s the drive-in without the cars! One of our most popular summer events, Movie Night presents a feature film each week during the summer on Fountain Square’s big screen in Cincinnati’s biggest living room. Families, couples, and groups of friends bring their own blankets, chairs, and pillows. Adult beverages, soft drinks, and movie snacks are available for purchase. Previews begin at 7:00pm, with the first movie to start soon after.
Sponsored by Strauss & Troy, a Legal Professional Association. Thanks to all the shoppers and vendors who supported the Strauss & Troy Market on the Square in 2011! Hundreds of visitors each week enjoyed shopping on Tuesdays for fresh produce, baked goods, prepared lunch foods and beverages, fresh flowers, and handmade items.
Plenty of city folk love the southern sounds of country, blues, and bluegrass. On Tuesday evenings this summer, music from live country and blues bands will fill the Square. Get ready to two-step and boot-scoot in the heart of downtown Cincinnati.
Take a mid-week break to “island time” on Wednesday evenings this summer. Reggae bands take the stage as we slowly cruise into the weekend. The Caribbean rhythms will carry you away and put you at ease.
Every Thursday through the summer, downtown workers unplug from a hectic day during lunchtime acoustic performances on Fountain Square. Acoustic Thursday typically features two groups or soloists performing folk, Celtic, blues, singer-songwriter, roots, or Americana music each week. The series showcases some of the best local musicians, including a number of Cincinnati Entertainment Award winners.
On Friday, August 10, Fountain Square will host an Indie Craft Market featuring handmade, unique, Etsy-style art & crafts. Cincinnati is home to many creative, independent artists and designers. The craft market will bring their wares before a perfect audience and add a new dimension to the regular Friday-night Indie Summer music series.
Fountain Square on Friday nights in the summer is the place to be for all fans of independent rock music. Fountain Square joins with MidPoint Music Festival to offer a FREE preview of MPMF’s indie music showcases all summer long. Local, regional, and national bands perform every Friday night! Join us after the event where the music will continue at our after party location Mainstay Rock Bar.
Come down every Saturday to enjoy this FREE show as local, regional and national Rappers, Artists, DJs and other Hip Hop Aficionados as they showcase their talents in the heart of downtown Cincinnati.

Congratulations Jason Stitt of Cincinnati, who ate a whole pint of Mayfield Ice Cream in 40 seconds to become the new ice cream eating champion!
Past champion and runner-up Joe LaRue were both eliminated in heat two to newcomer Marcus Guinn. Theresa Champion also won her heat and competed in the final.
The winner took home an ice cream cone hat and a year’s supply of delicious Mayfield Ice Cream – way tastier than a year’s supply of Turtle Wax.
